Booking your first yoga retreat can feel intimidating. If you browse websites, you will see photos of people performing complex handstands on beaches. It is easy to think that retreats are only for flexible, experienced yogis who spend hours meditating.
That is not the reality. The vast majority of people attending retreats are normal, everyday practitioners — many of whom are looking for a break from stressful jobs. I spent 11 years in financial services in London before booking my first retreat. I arrived skeptical, stiff, and exhausted. Since then, I have attended 14 retreats across 9 countries. Here is what you actually need to know before booking your first retreat, without the wellness jargon.
Why shorter is better for your first trip
Most retreat platforms recommend 7 to 10-day programs. I strongly disagree. For your first retreat, four to five days is the optimal length.
Here is why: a retreat is a significant change from daily life. You are eating different food, waking up early, practicing yoga twice a day, and spending time in a small group of strangers. Many first-timers hit a mental or physical wall around day three. If you are on a 5-day retreat, you can see the finish line. If you are on a 10-day retreat, it can become an expensive regret. Shorter retreats are also 20% to 30% cheaper, which lowers your financial risk.
The "gateway retreat" concept
If you or your partner are nervous about the yoga element, look for a "gateway retreat." These are programs that combine yoga with other activities, like hiking or surfing.
I regularly recommend a 4-day mountain retreat in Colorado to my former corporate colleagues. It is set in a beautiful national park, and the schedule includes hiking, outdoor hot springs, and gentle yoga classes. The yoga does not feel like the entire point of the trip. All three of the skeptical friends I sent there came back converts. It is the perfect entry point for people who say they are "not really the yoga type."
Red flags for beginner bookings
When searching for your first program, look out for these warning signs:
- No clear schedule: If a retreat does not publish a sample daily schedule, skip it. You need to know how much free time you will have.
- Unlabeled levels: A quality retreat will explicitly state if it is suitable for beginners. If it says "all levels" but lists advanced pranayama and 3 hours of morning vinyasa, it is not beginner-friendly.
- Worse than 1:20 teacher ratio: If a retreat has 25 guests and only one teacher, you will not get the adjustments or individual attention a beginner needs to practice safely.
Practical planning benchmarks
Here are the statistics of what you will experience on a standard vetted retreat:
- Solo travelers: Approximately 60% to 65% of retreat guests travel alone. You will not be the only one arriving without a partner or friend.
- Gender split: Women make up roughly 72% of retreat attendees globally, but mixed-gender retreats are welcoming to everyone. We also see a rise in excellent women-only retreats.
- Daily classes: Most beginner-friendly retreats offer two classes a day: a more active one in the morning, and a gentle, restorative class in the late afternoon.
